Inspired by the American-built Jeep that proved its mettle during World War II, chief designer at Rover cars, Maurice Wilks, envisioned a versatile British-built vehicle that could cater to the needs of both farmers and military personnel. Thus, the idea of the Land Rover was born.
Introduced in 1948, the Series 1 Land Rover boasted a robust design perfectly suited for the toughest conditions. Its distinctive box-like shape, featuring a flat bonnet and a sturdy chassis, was complemented by an aluminium body that saved on scarce post-war steel resources. This lightweight construction facilitated better fuel efficiency and improved manoeuvrability, making the Land Rover a formidable force off-road.
Under the bonnet, the Series 1 Land Rover was powered by a 1.6-litre petrol engine, delivering 50hp and a top speed of 55mph. Its four-wheel-drive system, equipped with high and low gear ranges, provided exceptional traction, and climbing ability, allowing it to conquer steep inclines and treacherous landscapes with ease.
